CAIRO – 10 March 2018: Staging in Cairo for the second time at the sixth India by the Nile festival following the performance in Alexandria, Thari – The Loom has introduced famous classical dances at El Gomhoureya Theater on Friday as the renowned classical Indian dancer Malavika Sarukkai performed with five other professional Indian dancers.

The veteran Indian dancer has choreographed Thari- The Loom which is comprised of crucial concepts common to the two disciplines of dance and weaving.

she managed to explore the artistic relationship between the dancer and weaver through innovation and imagination carried out in the performance, according to the event’s brochure.

The participating dancers included Aruna B, Shreema Upadhyaya, Jyotsna Jagannathan, Aditya PV, and Nidhag Karunad.

A choreographer specializing in Bharatanatyam, Sarukkai has won the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2002 and was honored by the Indian government in 2003.

A vibrant cooperation between the Embassy of India in Egypt and Teamwork Arts are producing a packed program in this year’s India by the Nile Festival. The sixth edition will be running from March 6 to March 17 showcasing multidisciplinary performances including puppet theatre, classical and contemporary music, visual arts, food, yoga, and dance across Cairo, Alexandria, and Port Said.

The annual festival is supported by TCI Sanmar, the Maulana Azad Centre for Indian Culture (MACIC) in partnership with Indian Council for Culture Relations, the ministries of culture and tourism, Cairo Opera House, and Bibliotheca Alexandria. This year’s edition seeks to provide audiences with an extravagant cultural experience, supporting collaborations between India and Egypt.
