CAIRO - January 23: Artist Shaimaa Alaa has announced the opening of her performance art exhibition “Farsh ‘w’ Ghata” (Sheets and Covers), which will take place from February 4 to February 24 at the Cairo Opera House. The title of the exhibition is inspired by the original song by the celebrated Upper Egyptian musicians Ahmed Breen and Mohamed el-Agooz.

For the exhibition, Shaimaa Alaa uses her impressions of the richness of Upper Egyptian musical style, which adopts a remarkably unique and engulfing approach to musical storytelling. The exhibition is a collection of artworks that visually depict the feelings surrounding Upper Egyptian music, featuring musical instruments and deep colors to visualize the ideas explored through the music.

The original song “Farsh ‘w’ Ghata” refers to the style of music that ebbs and flows between the two singers, each becoming a “cover” and shelter for the other.

Shaimaa Alaa is a Cairo-based photographer and visual artist. Alaa’s work draws from her experiences as an Egyptian woman, and is often inspired by Egyptian culture and Arabian traditions. Having participated in a number of festivals and exhibitions, Alaa has won awards for her work both locally and internationally.
