CAIRO – 1 January 2018: Prominent theatrical critics Azza Heikal, Ahmed Khamis, Yasmine Farrag and Rana Abdel Kawy chose the best four plays in 2017.

1- “Salem Nafsak” (Surrender)

The play revolves around society’s moral problems and the negative effects of social media on our daily life. The play stars the students of the Art Creativity Center Theater Studio’s third batch of graduates. It is directed and written by veteran director Khaled Galal. “Salem Nafsak” contains ideas presented by Galal to his students, who improvised them, and then Galal rephrased their improvisations in a theatrical form.

2- “Youm An Katalo el Gen’a” (The Day They Killed Singing)

The play presents the struggle between two brothers in their quest for the cause of existence and mystery of the universe. It examines the conflict between the spirit of tolerance and love on the one hand, with fanaticism and hatred on the other hand.

The show is composed by Mahmoud Gamal and directed by Tamer Karam, and it stars Alaa Quqa, Yasser Sadek, Hamada Shousha, Tarek Sabri, Mohamed Nasser and Hind Abdel Halim. “The Day They Killed Singing” opened on March 30 and was awarded the first-place prize at the 10th edition of the National Festival of Egyptian Theater.

3- “Kawaeed el Eshk el Arboon” (The 40 Rules of Love)

The play is based on the novel by the famous writer Elif Shafak. The play’s plotline revolves around a 40-year-old woman, Ella, who is in an unhappy marriage. She becomes a reader for a literary manager, and from there discovers the dynamic world of books, literature and poetry, which ultimately changes her life. She becomes heavily engulfed by a book she is working on.

The play stars Bahaa Tharwat, Ezzat Zain and Amira Abou Zaid, among others. Earlier this year, the play opened at Masrah El-Salam and made almost LE 2 million ($112,900).The musical “The 40 Rules of Love” is directed by Adel Hassan.

4- “Al Galsa: Shoghl Afareet” (The Session: Deeds of Imps)

The play revolves around two religious men, one Muslim and the other Christian, who collaborate together in a struggle against a demon, ending up winning and saving a girl that was seduced by the demon. The play stars Taha Khalifa, Fahd Ibrahim, Mido Abdel-Qader and Marina Magdi; it was written and directed by Monadel Antar.
