CAIRO – December 5 2017: Animation film “Ethel & Ernest” (2016) will be screening at Magnolia Leaves of Art on Monday as part of Magnolia’s weekly film screening program.

“Ethel & Ernest” is the film adaptation of the graphic novel written and illustrated by Raymond Briggs, based on the true story of his parents’ lives together. The film is directed by Roger Mainwood.

The story is set in London, England from the 1920s to the 1970s. In 1928, Ernest Briggs, a milkman, meets and marries Ethel, a housemaid. The film follows moments of their lives from the birth of their son in 1934 to their deaths in 1971.

Milestones and major events of the 20th century such as the Great Depression and World War II up until the moon landing of 1969 are explored through their eyes in a humorous and touching account of their lives. It gives a look into their English working class experiences, aspirations, dreams, and struggles in a time of great social and political transformation, showing the changes that take place in the couple’s forty years together, and the love that still binds them.

The film stars Brenda Blethyn as the voice of Ethel, Jim Broadbent as Ernest, and Luke Treadaway as Raymond. Other cast members include Pam Ferris as the voice of Mrs. Benet and Aunty Betty, Roger Allam as “the Doctor”, and June Brown as “Ernest’s Stepmother”.

Ethel & Ernest won the Best Animation award at the Córdoba International Animation Festival, and the Jury Award for Best Animated Feature at the Anima Mundi Festival. It received several nominations at different festivals including the Imaginaria Film Festival for Best Animated Feature Film and Melbourne International Film Festival for Best Narrative Feature.
