CAIRO - 8 March 2017: With aims to boost cooperation in fields of arts and culture, Egyptian Minister of Culture Helmi al-Namnam signed a Memorandum of Understanding Tuesday with Hugo César Protugal, the Peruvian Ambassador to Egypt, on behalf of the Peruvian Minister of Culture, according to a press release by the Ministry of Culture.

The MoU states cooperation in all cultural domains between Egypt and Peru, with an emphasis on the exchange of experiences, especially in regard to cultural management and heritage preservation.

During the signing ceremony, Namnam said signing the protocol aims at bolstering cultural cooperation between the two countries, pointing out that they share an ancient legacy.

“Historical studies point out that some Arabs who lived in Andalusia moved to Peru and impacted its ruins and monuments,” Al-Namnam said. “Readers of ‘Who Killed Palomino Molero?’ can see similarities between the village mentioned in the novel and Egyptian villages.”

For his part, Protugal said, “We believe Egypt and Peru have a legacy that dates back thousands of years, and we want to utilize this relationship in strengthening these relations.”

The minister confirmed that the National Translation Centre translated a set of works by Jorge LIosa.

This MoU comes as a renewal of the cooperation protocol between Egypt and Peru that started 1974, while the latest protocol signed between the two countries was in 2007.
