CAIRO – 3 December 2017: Some 27 statues and parts of Goddess Sekhmet’s statue were discovered in the Mortuary Temple of Amenhotep in Kom el-Hettân area located in Luxor’s left bank by the Egyptian-European mission.

Mostafa el Waziry the secretary general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities announced that the discovered statues are made of black granite, the longest of them is two meters in height.

Some of the statues are of Goddess Sekhmet sitting on the throne holding in their left hands The Ankh, which is a pharaonic hieroglyphic ideograph symbolizing life, while the others show Sekhmet standing holding a mace of papyrus, their heads decorated with sun and Ouroboros snake.

Professor Sorozyan, the head of the mission, recounted that some of the statues were discovered in a good condition while the others were in a bad condition as they were found in the deep layers of the ground.

Sorozyan added that the mission is currently cleaning and restoring the statues to display them in the Mortuary Temple of Amenhotep after restorations.
