CAIRO – 23 October 2017: Darb 1718 will screen a documentary film entitled “We are Egyptian Armenians” on Sunday as part of Zawya’s monthly program followed by a discussion.

The documentary revolves around the Armenian community that resided in Egypt after fleeing from the 1915 genocide. Portraying Egyptian acceptance of Armenian citizens in the country, the film also depicts the contribution of various Armenian generations to Egyptian community.
Armenians were active members of society and contributed to boosting the Egyptian economy. Armenians were able to pursue a different life in Egypt where they enrolled in schools, churches, and social clubs.

Members of the Egyptian society played a vital role in preserving the Armenian language and culture.
The film has participated in Luxor in many festivals such as Cairo International Film Festival 2016, and Karama Jordan Film Festival.

Armenians were present in Egypt during and before the reign of Muhamed Ali Pasha and later increased in numbers after the 1915 genocide.
Directed by Waheed Sobhy, “We are Egyptian Armenians” was released in 2016.
