CAIRO - 23 August 2017: This is the only short documentary in this list of recommendations. It is a heart-shattering account on the selfless heroic Syrian Civil Defense rescue workers, who are also called the White Helmets, and whose slogan is:

“We act neutrally, impartially and for all Syrians.” As unrelenting airstrikes kill civilians every day in Syria, driving people to flee the country or join militias to defend themselves and their sects, these daring volunteers fearlessly run to the warzones to rummage the rubbles looking for survivors.

They have a motto, "To save a life is to save all of humanity," which is a verse from the Quran. It is a noble goal that some of them are often killed while fulfilling.

The 41-minute documentary is so tragic that it will most probably leave you in tears. But it is also powerful and inspirational. Directed by the British filmmaker Orlando von Einsiedel, the film tells the stories of Khalid Farah, Mohammed Farah, and Abu Omar along with others. Apart from depicting their work, the film sheds light on their emotional personal lives and how they are affected by their hazardous job.

The White Helmets was the 2017 Oscar winner for Best Documentary Short Film;

making it the first Academy Award win for Netflix; the film’s distributor.

Go watch the film, be inspired, and support the White Helmets here.
