CAIRO – 14 June 2022: World Blood Donor Day is held annually on June 14.

The purpose of this day is to raise global awareness of the need for safe blood and safe blood components for transfusions; to highlight the vital contribution that voluntary and unpaid blood donors make to national health systems; and to support the national blood transfusion services, blood donor organizations and other NGOs in strengthening and expanding blood donation programs by promoting national and local campaigns.

This day also provides an opportunity to call on governments and national health authorities to provide adequate resources to increase the collection of blood from voluntary and unpaid donors, to manage the available blood stocks and to transfer it to those who need it.

Blood and blood products are an essential resource for the effective management of women with haemorrhage associated with pregnancy and childbirth; children with severe anemia caused by malaria and malnutrition; patients with blood and bone marrow disorders, hereditary hemoglobin disorders, and immunodeficiencies; victims of trauma, emergencies, disasters, and accidents; and patients undergoing advanced medical and surgical procedures.

The need for blood includes everyone, but the availability of blood to those who need it does not include everyone. Low- and middle-income countries are particularly affected by severe blood shortages.

To ensure that safe blood is available to everyone who needs a transfusion, all countries need voluntary, unpaid blood donors who give blood regularly. An effective blood donor program, characterized by broad and active participation of the population, is critical to meeting the need for blood transfusion in peacetime, emergency or disaster, when the demand for blood increases sharply or when the normal performance of blood services is affected.

While a favorable social and cultural climate and strong solidarity facilitate the development of effective blood donation programs, there is also widespread recognition that blood donation contributes to social bonding and communal unity.

In 2022, the theme for World Blood Donor Day will be “Donating blood is an act of solidarity. Join the effort and save lives,” drawing attention to the role blood donation plays in saving lives and strengthening solidarity within societies.
