CAIRO – 14 August 2020: Egypt affirmed that the maritime navigation in Suez Canal was not affected by any alternative international maritime trade routes, announced the Egyptian Media Center of the Cabinet in a statement on Friday.

After contacting the Suez Canal Authority, the cabinet denied media reports claiming that the Egyptian canal has been affected by other alternative routes. Over the past few weeks, some media outlets talked about an Iranian sea corridor that commercial connects Russia with India.

The number of ships transiting the Suez Canal increased to 19.300 ships over the year 2019/2020, compared to 18.500 ships that crossed the canal during 2018/2019, the Cabinet statement said.

Suez Canal’s revenues rose 2 percent during the first four months of 2020, recording $1.907 billion, up from $1.869 billion during the same period of 2019, Chairman of Suez Canal Authority Osama Rabea said on May 4, 2020.
