CAIRO – 28 December 2017: Minister of Local Development Hisham El Sherif inaugurated the furniture complex in the industrial city west of Tahta, Sohag on Wednesday.

During the inauguration, El Sherif stated that the total investment of the Tahta furniture complex is LE 450 million ($25 million), including LE 190 million for phase one.

The complex includes more than 200 workshops, as well as a school for technical education and a residential complex for the manufacturers with many services, including a mosque and a healthcare center.

The governor of Sohag said the furniture complex spans an area of 70 feddans, adding that the project comes among a number of projects by local authorities to help create more job opportunities for the youth.

The government repeatedly announced it is planning to set up a number of development projects in Upper Egypt.

The World Bank funds a local development program for Upper Egypt governorates, specifically Sohag and Qena, at a cost of $500 million.

In mid-December, the Cabinet approved a proposed development plan, set to be launched in January 2018 in the two governorates.

In Sohag, 14 projects will be carried out in the sewage sector and will benefit three towns and 12 villages, as well as 10 projects that will be implemented to develop industrial zones.

The plan also includes six projects to pave roads in six towns, four projects to develop archeological areas, two projects to extend drinking water to houses, and two projects for medical and veterinary purposes.

Minister of Industry and Foreign Trade Tarek Kabil announced that, during 2018, the ministry will open 22 industrial complexes, including Al Robiky City for leather, Damietta Furniture City and the Sohag furniture complex.
