CAIRO - 7 September 2017: Egypt aims to increase wheat-planted areas to 500,000 acres, to reach a total of 3.5 million acres next year, spokesman of the Ministry of Agriculture Hamed Abdel-Daim told Reuters Thursday.
“The government is going to provide incentives for farmers whether through subsidizing grains, fertilizers or fair prices for wheat export,” Abdel-Daim added.
Egypt consumes around 9.6 million tons of wheat annually and is the largest wheat importer around the world. It imported about 5.580 million tons in fiscal year 2016/2017 compared to 4.440 million tons in the previous year.
