CAIRO – 13 March 2025: The Ministry of Planning, Economic Development, and International Cooperation has published its second follow-up report on the NWFE National Platform, showcasing advancements in the integration of water, food, and energy projects.

The report was presented by Minister Rania Al-Mashat during a high-level event attended by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, alongside government officials, development partners, and private sector representatives.

The event, held under the theme “Two Years of Implementation,” reaffirmed the ministry’s dedication to economic diplomacy and transparency, highlighting the progress of NWFE projects since their launch in November 2022.

As part of Egypt’s sustainable development strategy, the government has increased the share of green projects in the national budget to 50 percent by the end of the current fiscal year.

Expanding the NWFE platform is a key element of this commitment, with four new projects added, including two renewable energy ventures by Norway’s Scatec, a renewable energy project by TAQA Arabia, and the Zaafarana seawater desalination plant in Ain Sokhna.

These projects reinforce Egypt’s status as a regional hub for green investment, attracting more international collaborations and further strengthening its commitment to a low-carbon future.

With NWFE achieving major milestones over the past two years and aligning with G20 and global financial institution standards, Egypt has now partnered with the African Development Bank (AfDB) to expand the initiative beyond its borders.

The first phase of this regional expansion will introduce NWFE to Kenya, Senegal, and Zambia, with future plans to extend the program across Africa.

In addition, four new projects focused on renewable energy and seawater desalination have been integrated, broadening the platform’s reach and enhancing its ability to attract innovative financing mechanisms.

Egypt’s leadership in green development has been further acknowledged by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which recently approved a $1.3 billion loan from the Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF).

This financial support will drive structural reforms in Egypt’s green transition, including NWFE’s expansion and the introduction of new sustainability-focused projects.

Minister Al-Mashat highlighted that Egypt is now the second-largest producer of renewable energy in Africa, according to a recent International Energy Agency (IEA) report, solidifying its leading role in clean energy production and climate action.
