CAIRO - 26 Janaury 2022: Minister of Environment Yassmine Fouad said that the government had already discussed a plan to transform Sharm El Sheikh into a green city.

The plan consists of several points topped by the effective implementation of a new national waste management system, depending on renewable energy, and reducing plastic bag use, Fouad added during the closing session of a forum organized by the American Chamber of Commerce in Egypt.

She noted that further measures had also been taken in cooperation with the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities to implement the first sustainable tourism strategy in Egypt.

On that score, Fouad underlined the importance of the Egyptian-US partnership for reinforcing climate change efforts and pursuing more ambitious policies by building relevant public-private partnerships for a green and better future.

Held under the theme: "Building Momentum to UN COP27; Strengthening public-private sector collaboration on the climate challenge," the forum is part of the ongoing preparations for the COP27 UN Climate Change summit Egypt will host in the Red Sea resort city in November.

Prominent among the speakers at the two-day event were Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli and US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry, who both participated via videoconferencing, Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry, International Cooperation Minister Rania el Mashat, and Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Tarek el Molla.

The forum focused on ways in which governments and the private sector can work together leveraging technology and innovation to address the climate challenge across the economy.

It endeavored to build momentum for the global discussion leading to the Egypt-hosted Summit in 2022 with a focus on the contributions of and role played by the business community in climate adaptation and mitigation in a leading emerging market economy.
