CAIRO – 16 November 2021: Egypt’s unemployment rate recorded 7.5 percent of the total labor force during the third quarter of 2021, compared to 7.3 percent in the second quarter of 2021, marking an increase of 0.2 percent during the previous quarter and the same quarter of prior year, according to the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS).

 

CAPMAS clarified in a statement, Tuesday, that the estimate of the size of the labor force recorded 29.380 million individuals, compared to 29.115 million individuals during the previous quarter, marking an increase of 0.9 percent.

 

The labor force in urban areas reached 13.187 million people, and 16,193 million people in the countryside. At the gender level, the size of the labor force for males reached 24,277 million, and 5,103 million for females.

 

The reason for this rise is due to the influx of new graduates during the months (August and September) into the labor market, which led to an increase in the unemployed in this quarter, which led to an increase in the labor force.

 

The statement pointed out that the number of the unemployed recorded 2,211 million, representing 7.5 percent of the total labor force (1,430 million males, 781 thousand females), compared to 2.115 million unemployed people in the second quarter of 2021. According to these data, the number of unemployed hiked by 96,000, or 4.5 percent, and an increase of 150,000 or 7.3 percent, compared to the same quarter of the previous year.

 

The unemployment rate among males reached 5.9 percent of the total males in the labor force in the current quarter, compared to 5.7 percent in the previous quarter, and 5.8 percent in the same quarter of the previous year.

 

The unemployment rate among females reached 15.3 percent of the total female labor force in the current quarter, up from 15.0 percent in the previous quarter, and 15.2 percent in the same quarter of the previous year.

 

The urban unemployment rate reached 11.4 percent of the total urban labor force, compared to 11.2 percent in the second quarter of 2021, and 10.9 percent in the same quarter of the previous year.

 

The unemployment rate in the countryside reached 4.4 percent of the total work force in the countryside, compared to 4.1 percent in the second quarter of 2021, and 4.5 percent in the same quarter of the previous year.
