Sudan asks UNSC to urge GERD parties to avoid unilateral actions

KHARTOUM - 2 June 2020: The Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs requested the UN Security Council (UNSC) to call on all parties engaged in the Ethiopian dam talks to refrain from unilateral measures that may affect regional and international peace and security as well as to support Sudan’s efforts to resume the dam talks in good faith to reach a comprehensive agreement satisfying all parties.

The Sudanese Foreign Minister Asma Mohamed Abdalla sent a message to the president of the UNSC to explain in detail Sudan’s stance on the developments related to the dam talks, said a statement released by the ministry on Tuesday.

The message included explanation of Sudan’s recent initiative, as part of which Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok contacted Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and reached an agreement to resume negotiations at the level of irrigation minister.

The foreign minister reiterated the stance that Sudan has been adopting throughout the rounds of talks which is based on negotiations in good faith.

Sudan is committed to the rules of international law stipulated in the UN Convention on the Law of Non-Navigational Uses of International Watercourses, the message added.
