CAIRO 10 April 2020: Egypt affirmed its support for the creation of an expert-level workforce off the Steering Committee of the Africa COVID-19 Response Initiative in coordination with the African Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, announced Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry in a statement on Thursday evening.

Shoukry’s comments came during a ministerial video-conference of the African ministers members of the AU Executive Council Bureau to discuss the repercussions of the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic on African countries, said Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ahmed Hafez in the statement.

The ministers tackled the ways of the establishment of a fund to provide the necessary resources to support combating the COVID-19 in the continent and the negative impacts of the pandemic on the African economies, Hafez added.

The Foreign Minister also affirmed Egypt’s appropriate financial support for the establishment of the fund, and for the Cairo-based Africa Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC).

“The participant ministers agreed on the importance of continuing action along with the G20 countries and with international partners in order to implement and build on what was agreed upon in the G20 meeting to support African countries,” Hafez said.

On March 26, 2020, President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi participated in an online mini-summit for the leaders of the AU Executive Council Bureau to discuss the ways of combating the coronavirus, Presidential Spokesperson Bassam Radi in a statement.

The African leaders agreed to establish an African fund to provide the necessary financial resources needed to combat the virus in Africa, Radi added.
