CAIRO, April 4 (MENA) – Arab League (AL) Secretary General Ahmed Abul Gheit has reiterated his call for putting an end to fighting in Libya, especially the ongoing military operations around Tripoli between forces of the Government of National Accord and the Libyan National Army.

Abul Gheit expressed deep regret over the continuity of clashes between the two warring sides after they broke out in western regions a year ago, on April 4, 2019.

This led to the stalling of peace efforts that were brokered by the UN mission in Libya and left hundreds of innocent civilians dead.

Abul Gheit renewed his call to silence the guns in Arab areas of conflict to help focus national efforts to combat the spread of the novel coronavirus pandemic, said a source at the AL General Secretariat.

The AL chief urged the Libyan leadership to uphold the country’s interest, immediately start to reduce escalation and abide by a humanitarian truce that leads to a formal, permanent and comprehensive ceasefire on the basis of the UN mission’s proposal made during negotiations of the Joint Military Commission held in Geneva.
