Human rights constitute important component of Egypt's development strategy

CAIRO - 25 February 2020: Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Human Rights and International Humanitarian and Social Issues Ehab Gamalel-Din confirmed Monday that Egypt considers human rights an important component in the comprehensive development strategy.

This came during Gamal el-Din's speech at the 43rd session of the Human Rights Council, which is currently being held in Geneva, Switzerland.

Gamal el-Din added that Egypt has a self-conviction of the centrality of building human beings, and a sure political will to build a state of the rule of law, as it attaches equal importance to all rights.He pointed out that the Egyptian state works with all its institutions to respect the law and constitution.

Gamal el-Din reviewed the positive steps Egypt has taken in the human rights file, referring to the human rights report submitted by Egypt in November 2019, along with the country's consultations with the National Council for Human Rights and civil society institutions

"Egypt also submitted five national reports to the committees concerned with civil and political rights, against torture, the rights of children and persons with disabilities, and against discrimination against women,"Gamal el-Dinsaid.

He notedthat President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi issued al law regulating civil work on July 2019 to be compatible with the international standards.The president discussed this law with more than 1,300 Egyptian and foreign organizations.

"Egypt also witnessed a qualitative shift in the realization of citizenship and non-discrimination, as well as in supporting religious freedoms, combating extremism, and spreading tolerance. This is in addition to teaching the principles of human rights and combating corruption starting from the current academic year in all colleges and higher institutes," he added.

Gamalel-Din indicated that the permanent Supreme Committee for Human Rights headed by Minister of Foreign Affairs SamehShoukryhas started preparing periodic reports and following up procedures, policies and legislation.

Gamal el-Dinstressed during his speech that Egypt is keen to drawthe attention of the Human Rights Council to many issues, including the negative effects of terrorism, the protection of the family as a basic unit of a society, the role of youth and their right to enjoy human rights.

He asserted the necessity for the council to assume its responsibilities and address the suffering of the Palestinian people and the violations they face, highlighting the council's role in promoting and protecting human rights in conflict areas such as Syria and Yemen, and its role in addressing hate speech and improving the conditions of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar.

The assistant foreign minister for human rights concluded by noting that Egypt calls for avoiding the negative practices and the polarization that threaten the credibility and universality of the council.
