CAIRO – 18 June 2017: When taking the historical decision to cut off diplomatic ties with Qatar, Arab states have escalated deep rooted accusations that the small gulf state has been a big financier for terrorist groups and a shelter for fugitive militants and dangerous Islamist leaders.

In a State Department cable released by WikiLeaks in 2009, US diplomats pointed out Qatar as “the largest funder of terrorism in the world.” Qatar is reportedly a major bankroller of the most notorious Islamist groups al-Qaida, Hamas, and militias associated with IS in Iraq and Syria.

Being mostly affiliated with the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood and associated with radical thoughts and acts of terror in European cities, the financial support offered by the rich oil state has also extended to smaller and less popular organizations in Europe.

The map below shows the main organizations and Islamic unions in Europe that have received thousands and millions of euros from the Qatari government, individuals and charity organizations.

Most of the funding appears to come from Qatar Charity, which was listed by Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, UAE and Egypt as one of 12 entities involved in tourism and linked to Qatar, on June 9.
