CAIRO – 24 December 2019: The Foreign Ministry announced on Tuesday that there is a consensus with Russia on the importance of avoiding the aggravation of the situation in Libya, Al Arabiya reported.

The US Department of State further announced that Washington is ready to “work with the UN and all parties to start political negotiations” on Libya.

“The foreign military intervention threatens the possibilities of resolving the conflict,” said Morgan Ortagus in a statement aired by the US-based TV channel Alhurra on Sunday evening.

The spokesperson for the Department of State also condemned the attacks on innocent civilians and called on “all parties to refrain from escalation”.

Libya has been divided since 2014 into rival military and political camps based in the capital Tripoli and the east. Serraj's government, supported by armed militias, is in conflict with forces led by Khalifa Haftar based in eastern Libya to restore legitimacy.

Turkey has backed Libya's al-Serraj government and the two sides signed a memorandum of understanding on maritime cooperation in the eastern Mediterranean, a move the U.S. official described as "unhelpful" and "provocative."

"Now with the maritime boundaries, you're drawing in Greece and Cyprus ... From the United States' perspective, this is a concern ... It's not the time to be provoking more instability in the Mediterranean," the official said.
