Putin says Senate unlikely to remove Trump from office

CAIRO – 19 December 2019: Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday he expects his U.S. counterpart Donald Trump's to remain in office despite the House of Representatives voting to impeach him on Wednesday.

Putin said the allegations against Trump are "made-up", adding that he believes the U.S. Senate is unlikely to remove Trump from office.

"It still needs to go through the Senate, where the Republicans have a majority," Putin said after the House of Representatives voted to impeach Trump for abuse of power. "And it is hardly likely that they are going to push out of office a representative of their own party, on grounds that are absolutely made-up," he added.

Putin added that Russia is ready to agree on a new Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) arms treaty with the United States. No responses has been made so far.
