CAIRO - 26 October 2019: Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry on Friday affirmed Egypt's firm stance in support of the role played by the United Nations in copping with the current challenges facing the world, especially those related to sustainable development, environmental protection, combating terrorism, and maintaining international peace and security.

Meeting UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo, the minister said several meetings between President Abdel Fattah El Sisi and the UN Secretary General in 2019 have played an important role in deepening mutual understanding on urgent issues and challenges facing the UN and the world.

They also contributed to affirming Egypt's priority to achieve stability in countries facing conflicts and crises in the Middle East and Africa, including Libya, Syria, Yemen, Iraq, Lebanon, the Horn of Africa, the Sahel and the Great Lakes, he added.

The meeting was held in Baku on the sidelines of the 18th Summit of the heads of state and government of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).

Shoukry also stressed the priority Egypt attaches to boosting the UN-AU partnership, while working to launch the African Union Post-Conflict Reconstruction and Development (AU PCRD) Center as an important platform to support UN peacekeeping and peace-building efforts in Africa.

The latest developments regarding negotiations on the Ethiopian Renaissance Dam were also mulled during the meeting.
