Turkish invasion in Syria likely to resurrect terrorist organizations: Italian newspapers

CAIRO - 13 October 2019: Italian newspapers and media outlets have been criticizing Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for his military invasion in North Syria despite international condemnation.

Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera said on Sunday that Erdogan insists on killing Syria civilians and that the Turkish military invasion has already resulted in the killing of tens of Syrians.

The newspaper further said that despite Erdogan remarks that the aim is to fight terrorist organizations, this invasion is likely to resurrect terrorist organizations in the region.

The U.S. military has provided training, weaponry and assistance to the Kurdish forces to fight the ISIS until its latest enclave was finally brought down, however, with the Turkish invasion, Kurdish fighters have ceased operations against remnants of the terrorist organization.

“Those of us who go from prison to fighting to the front are not replaced. We have a shortage in staff, furthermore, ISIS sleeper cells are taking part of this invasion against us,” a Kurdish fighter told the newspaper.

The newspaper also reported news about the Arab League condemning the intervention and evaluating the hypothesis of sanctions against Turkey for the offensive in northern Syria.

Turkish forces targeted areas around two Syrian border towns with fresh shelling on Sunday, pressing on with their offensive against Kurdish militia for a fifth day in the face of fierce international opposition.

More and more displaced people were arriving at centers, and more than 400,000 were affected by a loss of running water supplies including 82,000 residents of two refugee camps in the region.
