Libyan lawmakers emphasize Libya's civilian status, democratic transition
According to the concluding statement of their meetings, led by the Egyptian National Committee on Libyan affairs, the delegation reiterated maintaining the civility of the Libyan state, and its democratic path.
“We affirm Libya’s unity, and sovereignty over all its territories,” read the statement.
CAIRO - 14 July 2019: More than 80 Libyan lawmakers have gathered in Cairo, where discussions kicked off Saturday to reach a solution to deter foreign interference in the Libyan affairs. The meetings, led by the Egyptian National Committee on Libya, is part of a series of talks hosted in Cairo to bring together different Libyan parties for the sake of achieving stability and security in the war-torn state.
The statement further praised the important role played by Egypt, represented in its president, Parliament, government and people inthe Libyan crisis.
Egypt is a leading a mediator in the Libyan crisis, seeking to achieve stability and unify the military of its western neighbor, which represents a strategic depth of Egypt’s national security.
CAIRO - 13 July 2019: A number of Libyan lawmakers meeting in Cairo have praised Egypt's "wise leadership" in mediating talks between various Libyan factions, pinning their hopes on Egyptian role to combat Turkish intervention in Tripoli.
Thus, Egypt has mediated talks between the Libyan National Army (LNA) led by Khalifa Haftar and controls most of Eastern Libya, and the Libyan troops of the internationally-recognized government led by Prime Minister of the Government of National Accord Fayez al-Sarraj.
In August 2016, President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi decided to create the National committee on Libyan affairs, led by the armed forces’ chief of staff Mahmoud Hijazi, aiming to hold talks between all Libyan sides.
Libya has been inundated with civil war since the 2011 uprising that overthrew former Libyan longtime ruler Moammer el-Ghaddafi. The country has been at the center of the world’s attention for its importance as a major conduit for African migrants and refugees fleeing to Europe.
