CAIRO – 27 January 2019: President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi announced the establishment of as many as 1,000 kidney dialysis units bankrolled by Tahya Misr Fund to mainly serve children with kidney failure.

Sisi made the announcement in a speech delivered Saturday evening in a ceremony marking the launch of "Nour al-Hayah" initiative that aims at treating school children suffering vision problems, financed by the fund.

Nour al-Hayah initiative was launched after Minister of Social Solidarity Ghada Waly complained that many of the school children in the country suffer serious vision problems and demanded the state to intervene to help them undergo surgeries, including cataract and glaucoma surgeries, or to provide them with glasses, President Sisi said.

The initiative targets treating 5 million primary school students in the country, providing a million eyeglasses, and carrying out 250,000 eye surgeries.

During the ceremony, President Sisi said the government's budget allocated for feeding school children is inadequate. He said that more money is needed, as the state has to make sure the initiative will be sustainable before launching it.

Moreover, Sisi said that the Tahya Misr Fund contributes to establishing 250,000 housing units, who he said will change the lives of a million citizens.

He affirmed that since the national fund was established, Egyptians and foreigners have donated, adding that the first support for the fund came from abroad. The fund started in 2014 by LE 1 billion ($55.8 million) pumped by the military forces, Sisi said, adding that the fund's Secretary General Mohamed Amin promised to put LE 200 billion in the fund.

President Sisi established the Tahya Misr (Long Live Egypt) fund in 2014 in support of social and economic projects.

In September 2018, the fund announced providing free treatment doses to 60,000 Hepatitis C patients, who underwent Egypt's national medical check-ups to eliminate the blood-borne disease and other chronic diseases.

In June, 2018, Sisi announced he ordered the Interior Ministry to release all imprisoned debtors after the fund paid all their debts, asserting the importance of spending Eid al-Fitr with their families.

“We will always strive to uphold the human dignity and implement the necessary measures to preserve the social protection to reduce such phenomena that negatively affect social stability,” Sisi said on his official Facebook account.

An initiative dubbed “Prisons with Debtors” aims to release all debtors landing behind bars by paying off their debts (LE 30 million= $1.67 million) through Tahya Misr fund.
