CAIRO - 10 January 2019: US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has arrived in Egypt on Wednesday evening as his third stop in his Mideast tour that is set to end by mid-January.

During his visit, he met with Egypt's President, Foreign Minister, and Intelligence Chief, where they discussed recent regional developments including the future of the Palestinian-Israeli negotiations.

During his meeting with President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi, Pompeo stressed the US keenness to strengthen strategic relations with Egypt, as well as to enhance coordination on Middle East issues, Presidency spokesman Bassam Radi said.


Concerning counter-terrorism efforts, Pompeo praised Egypt's decisive efforts in fighting terrorism, expressing his country's support of these efforts, Radi said. He also affirmed that Egypt is a central partner in confronting the cross-border terrorism.

Pompeo congratulated Egypt for opening on Sunday the capacious mosque of Al-Fatah al-Alim, and the Middle East's largest Cathedral of Nativity, both in the New Administrative Capital, east of Cairo, Radi said.

The US minister also praised Egypt's President's efforts in achieving sustainable and comprehensive development in the country, which are reflected in the developmental progress Egypt currently witnesses, Radi added.

For his part, President Sisi stressed Egypt's keenness to strengthen bilateral cooperation and strategic partnership between the two countries, according to Radi. He also expressed aspiration to enhance coordination with the United States on various political and security issues of mutual concern.

Sisi affirmed the determination of the Egyptian government and people to continue their efforts to combat terrorism and eliminate the security and intellectual threats it poses. He stressed the importance of continuing coordination with the United States to support Egypt's counter-terrorism efforts, Radi said.

The meeting between Pompeo and Sisi discussed a number of regional issues, especially developments in Libya, Syria and Yemen, and the efforts to reach a political settlement to these crises, Radi continued.

The two officials also reviewed the latest updates of the Palestinian issue and means to revive peace process. In this regard, Sisi affirmed Egypt's firm stance represented in seeking a just and comprehensive solution that guarantees the rights of the Palestinian people, and establishes an independent state according to the international references.

Sisi expressed Egypt's keenness to cooperate with the United States to push forward the Palestinian-Israeli negotiations.
