CAIRO - 29 July 2018: Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukry met on Sunday the United Nations’ Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Nickolay Mladenov, during his visit to Cairo, to discuss the latest development in Palestine and ways to push the peace process.

against disarmed civilians in the Palestinian territories, the spokesperson of Foreign Ministry Ahmed Abu Zeid stated Sunday, pointing out that the minister warned against the continuation of the current situation and not resuming the peace process, in the light of the two-state solution and relevant international legitimacy.
During the meeting, Shoukry addressed the recent practices by the Israeli side, like the issuance of the Jewish nation-state law, saying that they threaten the historical and legitimate rights of the Palestinians, which will have a negative impact on the future of the peace process and rights of the Palestinian refugees. Shoukry affirmed Egypt’s firm support to the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, foremost of which is the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
Shoukry also reviewed Egypt’s efforts to achieve the reconciliation between Gaza and Ramallah, and to unify the Palestinian factions as a key step in peace process, and improving the lives of Palestinian citizens in West Bank and Gaza Strip.

The minister called on the international community to play its role in order to continue the pace of the humanitarian work of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), as well as providing the necessary support to the Palestinian people through the Ad Hoc Liaison Committee (AHLC).
On the other hand, Shoukry listened to Mladenov’s evaluation to the humanitarian conditions in the occupied territories of Palestine, the results of his communications and negotiations he carries out to mobilize the international efforts, and get a financial aid to support the UNRWA for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, besides the UN’s efforts to cease fire and start the reconstruction project.
From his side, Mladenov described the meeting with Shoukry in a tweet through his official Twitter account as a “positive discussion,” saying: “It was focused on the latest developments in the West Bank and how to avoid escalation in Gaza, resolve all humanitarian issues and support reconciliation.”
He expressed the UN’s appreciation to Egypt’s role in pushing the Palestinian reconciliation and ending the division between its factions, and its keenness on coordinating with the Egyptian administration during this critical phase.
Mladenov also met with Egyptian officials in order to de-escalate the situation in Gaza, and support the Egypt-led reconciliation process, according to another tweet of Mladenov.
At the end of the meeting, the two parties agreed on continuing consultation and coordination in the upcoming period to push the peace process and root stability in the region.
In an interview with Egypt Today in earlier July, Nickolay Mladenov affirmed that Cairo government has always been, and still is, a vital and key player amid the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, adding that Rafah border crossing, which Egypt opens regularly to ease the people’s suffering in Gaza, is considered to be a “lifeline” for Palestinians.
He added that the UN is doing its best to back Egypt’s efforts to reach complete reconciliation among Palestinian factions. He affirmed that Egypt has done a lot already to reach stability and decrease violence.

delegation is set to arrive in Cairo on Sunday, in order to discuss the Palestinian reconciliation with Egyptian officials.
