CAIRO – 28 June 2018: Egypt’s National Security sector has been engaged in a fierce war against terrorism over the past five years since June 30 revolution. Egyptian security forces showed a lot of strength and efficiency in the fight against terrorism, despite the big numbers of victims of the many assassination attempts that plagued the country in the last few years.

Former Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim faces a failed assassination attempt

On September 5, 2013, former Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim survived an assassination attempt in Cairo when an IED blows up his motorcade, injuring 22.
While Ibrahim was leaving his home in Cairo's Nasr City neighborhood, the blast struck near his convoy. Authorities at the begging pointed to a car bomb, but later said they suspected an explosive was thrown from a nearby building.

Security director of Alexandria survives an assassination attempt

In March 2018: The security director of Alexandria survived an assassination attempt, after a massive explosion targeted his convoy at Rushdy district in the center of Alexandria governorate.

Minutes after the attack, Security Director Moustafa al-Nemr appeared on TV inspecting the explosion site, which resulted in the death of police sergeant Ali Galal and the injury of four others, three of whom are policemen, who had been admitted to the military hospital of Moustafa Pasha for medical treatment.

Egyptian National Security Officer Mohamed Mabrouk assassinated

In November 2013, Egyptian National Security Officer Mohamed Mabrouk, 34 years old, was assassinated by masked gunmen who opened fire on the officer’s car and shot him dead.

Mabrouk was assassinated while he was leaving his residence and heading to work. Eyewitnesses said they saw two white cars parking earlier on both sides of the road, and then started to drive in the direction of the officer’s car which was moving slowly. Both cars cut the road, then masked gunmen went down from the second car and opened intensive fire on the officer’s car.

16 security officers die in Western Desert clashes: Interior Ministry

In October 2016, The Interior Ministry released a statement in which it announced that 16 security officers were killed during clashes with militants in Wahat in the Western Desert, which led to the killing of 15 militants.

The statement added that the Interior Ministry’s National Security Service received information about the location of dangerous militants taking shelter in the Western Desert’s kilo 135, and then a raid was launched.

The statement concluded by asserting the Interior Ministry’s solidified determination to eradicate terrorism and dry out its breeding grounds and hotbeds.


Two lieutenant colonels killed near Foreign Ministry

Ajnad Misr detonated a bomb near the Foreign Ministry in downtown Cairo, killing two lieutenant colonels and a key witness in a trial against former President Mohammed Morsi.

Earlier in June, a new Cabinet was sworn in before President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi; President Sisi replaced former Interior Minister Magdi Abdel Ghaffar, who has been minister of interior since March 2015, with Mohamed Tawfiq.
