CAIRO - 22 May 2018: Algeria, Egypt and Tunisia on Monday renewed their rejection of all forms of foreign interference in Libya's internal affairs.
"Foreign interference undermines the country's political process, prolongs the crisis and threatens security and stability in Libya and neighboring countries," the foreign ministers of the three countries said in a statement in support of the political settlement in Libya.
The statement was issued following a tripartite meeting of Sameh Shoukry of Egypt, Khemaies Jhinaoui of Tunisia, and Abdelkader Messahel of Algeria in Algiers. They discussed the latest developments in Libya and prospects for a political solution in the Arab country.
The ministers reviewed the developments in Libya, particularly the political settlement process, the security situation, and challenges facing ending the crisis and restoring security and stability nationwide. They renewed their stance in support of a political solution.
They also mulled efforts exerted by the three countries to help the Libyans overcome the political obstruction in a way that preserves Libya's sovereignty, territorial integrity and people, renewing their support for a work plan presented by UN envoy to Libya Ghassan Salame, adopted by the UN Security Council on 10 October 2017.
The top diplomats stressed the necessity of the international role in implementing the Libyan political agreement reached in December 2015 with the aim of putting an end to the crisis and building strong national institutions, especially a unified army and security services with the task of safeguarding public security, fighting terrorism and building unified and effective economic bodies.In their final communique, the foreign ministers of Egypt, Tunisia and Algeria stressed the importance of putting the UN action plan into effect, noting the steps taken in this regard.
They urged the Libyan parties at all levels to make further concessions upholding the national interest above all considerations and to achieve the necessary consensus to end the transitional phase.
The ministers asserted the need to create the necessary conditions to accelerate the implementation of the UN action plan, calling on the Libyan parties to shoulder their responsibilities and continue to engage in good faith in achieving this path by establishing broad consensus that paves the way for a comprehensive national reconciliation.
The foreign ministers warned that delays in reaching a solution will open the way for further escalation and the spread of violence, terrorism and conflicts.
An inter-Libyan political solution must be reached, the ministers affirmed.
They warned of the deterioration of the living conditions of the Libyan people because of the instability and the continuation of political obstruction, stressing the priority of providing public services to the Libyan citizens and improving the conditions of their daily lives.
The ministers agreed to continue security coordination to assess threats posed by terrorist groups to the security and stability of Libya, the three countries, and the other neighboring states, and to enhance the exchange of information and monitor terror movement into the region.
They also agreed to held their next meeting in Cairo.
