CAIRO – 19 March 2018: Egyptian Ambassador to Kuwait Tariq al-Qouni said Monday that the 2018 presidential election's results were sent electronically to the National Election Authority (NEA) after the votes were counted on Monday morning.

In a statement to MENA, Qouni remarked that the numbers of votes for each candidate, as well as the invalid votes, were identified on Monday. The data was registered and sent electronically according to NEA instructions. Additionally, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was notified about the details of the election process.

He added that the doors were closed at 9 PM on Sunday, according to the NEA's instructions, while the balloting process lasted till 10:15 PM inside the voting office.

He further explained that the votes were counted by members of the Egyptian diplomatic mission in Kuwait; the election support team sent by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and delegates from each candidate.

In the same context, Qouni expressed his appreciation to Egyptian expatriates across the world who were keen to participate in the election.

Qouni also noted the full cooperation of the Kuwaiti authorities, led by the foreign and interior ministries, with the Egyptian Embassy, that led to a successful electoral process.

He also lauded the Kuwait private companies' cooperation with the Egyptian Embassy to allow Egyptian workers to obtain their passports, thus enabling them to cast their ballots in the presidential election.

The presidential election has been running over the past three days in 139 foreign embassies and consulates across 124 foreign countries.

The National Election Authority spokesperson Mahmoud el Sherif said previously that the NEA will release a detailed report on the election’s participation rate following the end of the voting process for citizens residing in Egypt. The voting process in Egypt will take place between March 26 and March 28.

Sherif, who also serves as the deputy head of the authority, said that Egyptian embassies abroad witnessed a huge turnout from each country's Egyptian community.

He added that the NEA has not been informed of any obstacles facing voters abroad while casting their ballots, even in Turkey and Qatar, and expressed the authority’s full readiness to address any issues in this regard.

Consulates and embassies across the world were to officially close the polls Sunday at 9 PM local time in each country.
