Yemeni FM praises Egypt’s participation at UNSC

CAIRO – 2 January 2018: Yemeni Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdul Malik al-Mekhlafi praised Egypt’s role during the two-year (2016-2017) membership of the Security Council for the non-permanent seat.

On his official Twitter account, Mekhlafi wrote that the Egyptian delegation of the UNSC was competently representing the Arab world, its issues and concerns, including the Yemeni conflict.

“Egypt worked closely with Yemen during the past two years; I want to thank my dear brother, Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukry, and Egypt’s envoy for the United Nations, Amr Aboul Atta,” Al- Mekhlafi wrote on his twitter account.

“I met President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi during December 2015, days before Egypt starts its membership at UNSC. He affirmed to me that Egypt will represent all the Arab cases, including Yemen’s,” Mekhlafi wrote, adding, “he told me to consider Yemen as a member of the UNSC.”

Mekhlafi pointed out that Egypt’s resolution draft, which was issued at the Security Council on December 18, represents Egypt’s continuous efforts to support Arab nations.
He also congratulated Kuwait for winning its non-permanent membership seat at the UNSC for 2018/2019. Mekhlafi stated that he is completely confident of Kuwait’s capability to represent Arabs.

Egypt held the Security Council’s non-permanent seat for 2016-2017 with 179 votes in May 2015.

“We were not only representing the Egyptian governmental bodies, but we also had a great responsibility discussing the Arabian and African cases in the council, especially with the minor representation of Arab and African countries. During our non-permanent membership period in the Security Council, we are keen on making the best we can,” Egyptian Ambassador to Italy Hesham Badr said in July 2017.
