Known for his relatively moderate approach since his 2009 appointment as chief censor, Dr. Sayyed Khattab has endorsed changing local censorship laws in the aftermath of the revolution. In March, Khattab suggested that censors should only view films not to cut scenes but to assess their appropriateness for different age groups, such as 12 and older or 18 and older. The classification approach is modeled on rating systems used by film industry groups such as the Motion Picture Association of America and the British Board of Film Classification. Before becoming Chief Censor, Khattab was a theatrical director who earned his PhD in Italy and returned to Egypt to teach at the Academy of Arts. His statements came at the same time as 200 Egyptian filmmakers and intellectuals issued a signed declaration calling for similar changes to the censorship process.
