CAIRO – 24 December 2020: The Egyptian Health Ministry reported 1,021 new coronavirus cases over Thursday, the country’s largest daily count since July 9.

The total number of cases reported by the country since the crisis started in February rose to 128,993.

The statement added that 51 patients died from the virus in the same period, raising the death toll to 7,260.

As many as 513 patients were discharged from isolation hospitals after receiving necessary medical care, taking the number of recovered cases to 108,474 so far, the statement said.

The Egyptian Cabinet issued a statement on Wednesday, canceling the Christmas celebrations amid the current pandemic, particularly after the coronavirus strain has mutated.

The Egyptian ministries and governmental authorities have started applying new measures to curb the spread of coronavirus, including reducing the attendance of employees and activating the rotation system.

Health Minister Hala Zayed officially announced on Wednesday that Egypt is facing a second wave of the pandemic.

Egypt earlier this month received a batch of doses of a coronavirus vaccine developed by Chinese Sinopharm. The health ministry is set to start vaccinating doctors working at fevers, cancer and chest hospitals within days.
