CAIRO – 16 December 2020: President of the National Institute for Astronomical and Geophysical Research Gad el-Kady stated that Egypt is far away from entering the earthquake belt, denying rumors of possible disasters.

Egypt has witnessed a number of tremors over the past weeks, which made many people expect a major earthquake to hit the country.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.4 on the Richter scale has hit Cairo and other coastal cities on Saturday.

The epicenter of the tremor was inside the Mediterranean, and was felt by residents of coastal cities and Cairo.

The National Seismic Network operates through 70 stations whose locations have been carefully selected to spot all tremors and record them.

No casualties or damages have reported thus far.
