CAIRO – 29 November 2020: In principle, Egypt’s Senate, chaired by Speaker Abdel-Wahab Abdel-Razeq, approved the draft statute of the Senate.
 
The new approved regulating bill includes 293 articles that were drafted in accordance with Articles No. 118 and 254 of the 2014 Constitution and legal materials regulating the work of the Senate to avoid any formal or substantive violation.
 
The approval was granted in the plenary session that was held on Sunday. Lawmaker Rasha Wessim Abdel Rahman took the constitutional oath as deputy speaker of the Senate.
 
On October 18, 2020, the Senate witnessed the inaugural session, during which Abdel-Razeq was elected as the Speaker, besides electing two deputies.
 
On October 1, Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al Sisi issued, decree no. 577 of 2020 to invite the Senate to hold its first regular session of the first legislative term. In August, Counselor Lashin Ibrahim, head of the National Elections Authority and deputy president of the Court of Cassation announced that 8.959 million votes cast their ballots in the Senate elections.
