CAIRO – 15 October 2020: In the meetings of the 37th Ordinary Session of the African Union Executive Council, held via video-conference on October 13-14, 2020, Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukry voiced his country’s appreciation for all efforts exerted in order to achieve the AU institutional reform objective, said the ministry in a statement on Wednesday evening.

Shoukry also affirmed Egypt’s support for upgrading the efficiency of both the Union’s Commission and the Secretariat of the Regional Economic Communities (RECs), so as they could be able to implement the plans and programs of the AU Agenda 2063, the statement added.

“The meeting tackled a number of key issues on the African scene, mainly the progress achieved with regard to addressing the various repercussions of the Coronavirus pandemic on African countries, and preparing for the second coordination summit of the AU and RECs, in addition to preparations for the 2021 joint action plan in the cultural field, as well as a number of other issues on the meeting’s agenda and related to the work of the various AU organs,” said Ministry spokesperson Ahmed Hafez in the statement.

Hafez continued that the participants approved the 2021 AU budget, taking into consideration the importance of considering the economic repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic on “the ability of Member States to pay their contributions, as well as the importance of their support to the Union in order to ensure the smooth running of its work and its capability to carry out the functions assigned to it by the Member States.”
