CAIRO – 28 September 2020: President Abdel Fattah El Sisi has directed the government to upgrade the capitals of governorates and metropolitans in the same manner of “Al Asmarat” and “Bashayer El Kheir” development in Cairo and Alexandria, said Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli on Monday.

The government would conduct a survey on state-owned lands for establishing a comprehensive civilized residential project in each governorate capital to serve the local residents, Madbouli said in a virtual meeting with the governors’ council.

President Abdel Fattah El Sisi, since he has assumed office in June 2014, has been keen to "make a new Egypt” and has filled the capital and other governorates and new cities with seemingly endless construction work.

Despite the coronavirus crisis and the partial shutdown the country, like many other countries, has witnessed, Sisi has been inspecting the construction sites in different parts of the country, to make sure workers are doing their best while taking preventive measures seriously.

The state has tackled the long-standing thorny issue of developing unsafe and unplanned slums. In this field, 165,958 units have been established in 298 areas that have been developed, at a total cost of LE 41 billion ($25.34 billion). Separately, 74,927 units have been established in 59 areas that have been developed at a total cost of LE 22 billion ($1.36 billion).

A total of 53 unplanned areas have been developed and 17 others are under development, at a total cost of LE 318 billion ($19.65 billion).
