CAIRO – 17 September 2020: Egypt participated in the world celebration of the International Day for the Protection of the Ozone Layer on Wednesday, which comes under the slogan “Ozone for Life.”

The Egyptian Environment Ministry and its Ozone Unit is exerting great efforts to preserve the ozone layer, said Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad in a statement on Thursday.

“Egypt has an important role in the negotiations for international environmental agreements. Egypt had a fundamental role in signing the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer,” she said.

The Minister said that the Ministry of Environment has managed to get rid of about 99% of ozone-depleting substances, saying “we are working on getting rid of the least harmful substances, Chlorofluorocarbon (HCFCs), via reducing the consumption by 70 percent by the end of 2024, to completely dispose of these materials before 2030.”

Last year on the same occasion, the United Nations gave Egypt $5 million to support eco-friendly companies to reduce ozone-depleting substances. The Egyptian ministry has received $3.5 million from the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and $1.5 million from the United Nations Industrial Development Program to support companies of refrigeration, air conditioning, and foam, and to enable them to update their capabilities and hence preserve the environment.

In 1985, the world governments approved the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer, which aims at getting rid of 99 percent of all ozone-depleting substances.
