Egypt’s FM Shoukry discuss latest MENA updates in phone call with Spanish counterpart

CAIRO – 5 August 2020: Egypt’s Minister of Foreign affairs Sameh Shoukry discussed with Spanish counterpart Arancha Gonzalez Laya the latest political developments in the MENA region especially regarding the Libyan situation.

According to Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Ahmed Hafez, Shoukry reviewed the Egyptian stance regarding reaching a comprehensive and sustainable settlement to the Libyan crisis by stabilizing the ceasefire and continue efforts to activate the “Cairo Declaration”.

Shoukry also stressed the need to firmly confront all transfers of terrorists and fighters into Libya, along with rejecting all foreign interventions.

 The phone call between the two ministers also discussed developments regarding the Palestinian issue, where Minister Shoukry stressed the importance of preserving the two-state solution in accordance with the relevant international legitimacy decisions, and the need not to take any unilateral measures in light of what is reported about Israeli intentions to annex parts of the Palestinian territories, which would undermine Peace chances.

For her pasrt, Minister Gonzalez Laya emphasized the importance of containing all escalations in the Eastern Mediterranean Region and the need to respect the rules of international law and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, while giving importance to the stability of the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Hafez pointed out that the two ministers affirmed the strength of the extended relations between Egypt and Spain in various fields.
