CAIRO – 20 January 2020: Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio made positive remarks about Berlin Conference on Libya, saying that it will be “successful,” according to Italian newspaper Corriere di Viterbo.

He expressed Italy’s readiness to host the coming meeting to implement the practical policy, revealing that he met with his Egyptian and Turkish counterparts on the sidelines of the conference.

Di Maio stressed that Egypt has a great influence on the Libyan parties, adding that Italy is working to guarantee the ceasefire and to begin a peace process to achieve stability in Libya.

Italian newspaper Corriere di Viterbo quoted Di Maio as saying that Berlin Conference will be a success as it gathered all key actors in the conflict around a table of discussions. He asserted that the Libyan conflict is affecting Italy and Europe. "A few kilometers away from our beaches, there is a civil conflict that turned into a war.”

He added, “The outcomes of the conference will certainly be positive, but the countries of the European Union should demand the start of a political process immediately. The blockade imposed on Libyan oil exports weakens the people.”

The Italian foreign minister ensured, "This war helps terrorist cells spread, leading to the presence of humanitarian emergencies, as the lives of many Libyan citizens are in danger."

On the sidelines of Berlin Conference on Sunday, Di Maio met with Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry, where they discussed regional issues of mutual concern, the rapid developments on the Libyan scene, and ways to push efforts to reach a comprehensive settlement that addresses all aspects of the crisis.

Both sides also stressed the importance of enhancing the chances of success of the Berlin political process by addressing everything that would hinder that path.
