CAIRO, Oct 15 (MENA) - The Arab League stressed the necessity of innovation and its role in achieving economic and human development in the region.

Giving an address at the Arab Regional Meeting on Global Innovation Index, Minister Plenipotentiary Dr. Maha Bakheet, the Director of Intellectual Property and Competitiveness Department at the Arab League, said she is closely following up the successful attempts of a number of Arab states to keep pace with the global innovation.

She further noted that the UAE has maintained its good standing in this year's edition of the Global Innovation Index, GII, ranking among the top 3 innovation economies in the Northern Africa and Western Asia region and jumping two spots to 36th globally. The UAE ranked first at the Arab level, it was followed by Kuwait, she said.

She also stressed the importance of benefiting from the experience of these countries and trying to apply them in other Arab countries.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Mario Matus and Director of WIPO Regional Bureau for Arab Countries, Development Sector, Walid Abdel-Nasser.
