CAIRO – 23 September 2019: The Egyptian Coalition for Human Rights and Development (ECHRD) is closely following the latest calls inciting Egyptians to demonstrate in the streets and breach the laws regulating peaceful protests.

In a Sunday statement, the 500-NGO Coalition strongly condemned such calls.

“While reiterating our commitment to international agreements, the law, constitution and civilian’s rights to peaceful demonstrations, we denounce all attempts to break the law or challenge it,” the statement said.

ECHRD added that they also denounce incitement to destabilize Egypt’s organizations security or stability, “leading to a situation reminiscent of Egypt’s political status during the past few years.”

The coalition, which includes NGOs from fifteen governorates, added in its statement that they “believe we are facing several challenges and problems we all seek to defeat,” however, “we also think that this should be done through the legal communication methods that guarantee respectable negotiations between all parties, and away from all the skepticism raised by “extremist voices” in the society.

These “extremist voices,” according to the statement, aim at “spreading rumors inside the country and provoking strife between the country’s organizations and civilians.”

ECHRD stressed in the statement that NGOs should be doing their job underneath the human rights umbrella as an “integral partner” for the country’s development plan. On top of that, the civil society needs to counter some of the claims that the NGOs have not achieved gains for the Egyptian community lately. Contradicting the claims, the statement cited the new NGOs law and women’s rights turned into laws as major victories.

“The NGOs and the state’s organizations should continue their efforts and cooperation leading to the country’s reform and development” ECHRD stated.

On Monday, the Coordination Committee of Party’s Youth Leaders and Politicians (CPYP) issued a statement commenting on the incidents that took place during the past days in Egypt, and the social media controversy that ensued.

“The Egyptian nation has demonstrated its full awareness of the devious methods and the use of modern technology or the media of terrorism to falsify facts,

While stressing that the expression of opinion by all peaceful means is an inherent constitutional right, CPYP also emphasized the need for extreme attention and non-acceptance of the use of this freedom of expression by the Muslim Brotherhood group to undermine the security and stability of the country,” read the statement.
