Huge fire erupted resulting from a blast caused by a tragic accident outside the National Cancer Institute downtown Cairo - Hussien Talal/ Egypt Today

CAIRO, 5 August 2019: All patients and staff members of the National Cancer Institute are fine, the information office of Cairo University confirmed after a huge fire erupted resulting from a blast caused by a tragic accident outside the medical edifice in downtown Cairo.

The office said in a press statement that according to preliminary reports a speeding car traveling in the wrong direction of the road in Corniche el Maadi street in downtown Cairo crashed into a number of vehicles causing a huge explosion just outside the university’s National Cancer Institute which resulted in many fatalities and injuries especially among pedestrians in the street.

The accident happened close to the administrative building of the institute away from the patients’ rooms, the statement read.

Immediately after the accident occurred the university president formed an operations room to handle the situation and the university’s El Kasr El Aini Hospital announced a state of alert to be ready for receiving any of the ijnured cases, it said.

The university president ordered that a technical committee be formed to check on all parts of the institute to assess any damage that might have been caused by the strong explosion, it added.

He and a number of the university’s senior officials visited the institute to follow up the unfolding situation and assuage all concerns of the panicked patients and their families, the statement pointed out.
