BAGHDAD - 28 July 2019: Iraq will establish its proposed military base in the Gulf between Iran and Kuwait, an Iraqi security source said.

Alsumaria TV news channel quoted the source as saying that the planned naval base in the city of Basra would be responsible for securing Iraq's territorial waters and protecting its southern maritime port.

He went on to say that a large budget was allocated to build the base, which will be the first of its kind since 1990, in addition to funding a program for arming Iraqi naval forces.

Earlier, Iraqi Defense Minister Najah al Shammari had announced the establishment of the largest military naval base in the Arabian Gulf's waters to develop Iraqi naval forces' capabilities.
