CAIRO - 18 July 2019: President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi met on Wednesday with Minister of Defense Mohamed Zaki, where the latter reviewed plans to upgrade the efficiency and combat training programs, using the latest weapon systems coming into service of the Egyptian army.

This comes as part of the political leadership's keenness to develop and modernize various branches and formations of the Armed Forces, in accordance with the challenges faced by the state at the various strategic directions, presidential spokesman Bassam Radi said in a statement.

Egyptian Army Chief-of-Staff Mohamed Farid and director of Military Intelligence and Reconnaissance Administration Khaled Megawer attended the meeting.

President Sisi lauded the efforts exerted by the armed forces and the sacrifices they offer to defend the homeland in parallel with supporting the efforts of comprehensive development in various fields, Radi said.

Sisi stressed the importance of preparing and training the fighters of the Armed Forces, in accordance with the latest scientific methods and the development of the Armed Forces' tasks in defending the homeland and protecting the achievements of its great people, according to Radi, as these fighter are considered the cornerstone of the combat capability of the Armed Forces.

Sisi referred to the victims who have lost their lives while defending the security and stability of the country, saying that the Egyptian State provides much care for the families of these victims, the statement read.

On Wednesday, Sisi also received Colonel General Hashem Abdel Muttalib Ahmed Babakr, Sudan's army chief of staff, who was appointed by the military council few days after the ousting of Bashir.

During their meeting, Sisi congratulated the Sudanese people after the transitional military council and the Forces of the Freedom and Change (FFC) initialed a power-sharing political agreement.

The accord reached earlier in July and initialed on Wednesday is believed to pave the way for democracy and smooth power transition in Sudan, following the ousting of President Omar al-Bashir in April.
