CAIRO - 9 July 2019: Prime Minister Mustafa Madbouli launched on Tuesday a new drilling machine in Nasser station, in the first part of the third phase of Line 3 of the underground.

Madbouli pointed out that the government's efforts to promote all facilities of the transport sector aim to serve the objectives of development and contribute to raising the citizens' quality of life.

The ceremony was attended by Minister of Transport Kamel al Wazir, Minister of Investment and International Cooperation Sahar Nasr, and Minister of Housing Assem al Gazzar along with Cairo Governor Khaled Abdel Aal.

Madbouli said that President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi issued directives to work on completing all the stages of the metro and upgrade the services it provides. He added that the government is exerting extensive efforts to upgrade the transport sector.

Madbouli said that Egyptian companies have acquired experience in this field in cooperation with their French counterparts. The Egyptian side is taking over the main part of the job, Madbouli stressed.

Costs of the third phase of Line 3 amount to LE 30 billion, he said, adding that the total cost of the line hit LE 97 billion.

On June 15, 2019, Egypt inaugurated three new stations in the third line to serve the commuters during the African Cup of Nations Championship. Around 3.5 million Cairenes use the metro every day, switching between stations to reach their destinations while paying an affordable ticket.

Launched in 1987, the metro has since become the most important means of transportation, helping passengers to avoid getting stuck in Cairo traffic or having to negotiate fares with unmetered taxis. Female commuters can choose to take the non-segregated cars or use the women-only carriages.
