Egyptian civil engineer Hani Azer to be awarded German’s Order of Merit

CAIRO – 14 June 2019: World famous Egyptian civil engineer Hani Azer will be awarded Friday the first class of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in recognition of his achievements to the German nation.

The honoring ceremony will be attended by Lord Mayor of Dortmund Ullrich Sierau on behalf of German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Egyptian Ambassador to Germany Badr Abdel Aaty, Metropolitan Mikhail of Asyut, and a number of Egyptian and German officials, besides political, parliamentarian and public figures.

In a statement on Friday, the Egyptian Ministry of Immigration expressed its deep pride and appreciation for the achievements made by Egyptian geniuses in different fields, ensuring that Hani Azer is a prominent model in Egyptian engineering with an innate talent that enabled him to produce creative major projects.

Azer, who is an advisor for Egyptian president and a world-renowned tunnels expert, has been famous for the international arena after he headed the construction of the tunnel beneath Berlin’s Tiergarten in 1994, and became the chief engineer of Germany’s fourth largest train station in Berlin, known as the Berlin Hauptbahnhof.

Azer was chosen among the top 50 Berliners of the year in 2006.

Born in Tanta in 1948, Azer earned bachelor’s degree from the Faculty of Engineering, Ain Shams University, and then moved to study post-graduation in civil engineering in Germany.
