CAIRO – 26 May 2019: The prosecution ordered referring a church guard charged with murdering Priest Makar Saad of St. Mark's Church in Cairo's Shubra al-Khaimah's district to the criminal court earlier in May.

Church guard Kamal Shawky, 54, who turned himself in, faces charges of premeditated murder, and possessing unlicensed gun and bullets. According to the investigations, the priest suffered seven gunshot wounds in the head, face and chest.

Earlier, it was revealed that the victim was shot dead in his room in the church. The murderer admitted the crime, saying that the late priest promised to provide him with financial support, but he did not keep his promise. A fight started between them, he said, before he fired many times at the priest from a 9 mm handgun that he hid.

The security directorate said that Priest Makar Saad had previously given Kamal LE 1,000 to help him with his daughters' wedding expenses.
Also, in April, a Damanhour criminal court sentenced two former monks convicted of killing Bishop Epiphanius, late head of the Saint Macarius Monastery in Wadi El-Natroun, to death over premeditated murder.
