CAIRO – 5 May 2019: President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi announced that the Egyptian Armed Forces’ role in the under-construction civic mega-projects is just supervisory to guarantee the projects are implemented on time.
“All working companies are Egyptian and civic, with Egyptian laborers…The Armed Forces’ role is advisory and administrative,” said President Sisi during the inauguration of 12 mega-projects in Ismailia and Central Sinai on Sunday.
Since President Sisi assumed power in 2014, most of the state’s civic projects were assigned to the Armed Forces Engineering Authority (AFEA). In 2016, President Sisi announced that the role of the Armed Forces in the economy will shrink within two years.
In his speech at the inauguration, Sisi said that Armed Force’s administrative role targets implementing the state’s strategic projects that cover 10 areas nationwide on time, adding that the projects will provide good job opportunities for youth. Ismailia and Sinai are among the 10 covered areas, he added.
Sisi stressed that development fights terrorism. “Countering terrorism and extremism should not confine to security measures. Terrorism should be fought by development, culture, and religion,” he said.
“States are never built by laziness. They are built by [exerting] efforts, working, patience, and commitment.” said Sisi.
‘Egyptians can make a change’
“Egyptians never allow anybody to violate their rights. As they made a change in January 2011 and June 30 [uprisings], they can make a change for a third time and for a fourth time if they refuse what is being said. Egyptians are aware enough to bear the economic [reform] measures,” said Sisi.
The people’s right is to live and provide good opportunities for their children, Sisi added, saying “I have nothing to hide; I am not afraid of anything. This is my home and I will protect it.”
Sisi noted that Egypt has lost a lot of money and the economic situation has deteriorated as a result of January 2011 Revolution, saying “If protests can build Egypt, all Egyptians and I will take to the streets to build it.”
"The people deserve to move forward," Sisi concluded.
